ABOUT JOSH

Josh Coleman has dedicated his life to public service, social justice, and progressive change. As the Deputy Director of the Division of Social Justice and Racial Equity and LGBTQ+ Liaison for the City of Birmingham, Josh works to create policies and programs that uplift marginalized communities. He also leads the Academy of Civic Engagement (ACE), which has graduated over 1,000 residents in civic education, fostering a stronger, more informed Birmingham.

Josh played a pivotal role in Randall Woodfin’s historic 2017 mayoral campaign, serving as a key strategist in mobilizing support and helping to secure victory. Following this success, Mayor Woodfin appointed him as the city’s first LGBTQ+ Liaison, a groundbreaking role in Alabama that underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusion.

In Democratic politics, Josh has been an influential leader. As President of the Alabama Young Democrats, he implemented the 67 County Strategy, visiting every county in the state to engage young voters and strengthen local party organizations. Under his leadership, the Young Democrats of America held their first national meeting in Alabama, and Josh partnered with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to conduct vital campaign trainings.

Elected to the DNC in 2020, Josh has represented Alabama on the national stage, focusing on grassroots organizing, strategic planning, and enhancing communication among Alabama Democrats. During the pandemic, he championed the need for virtual meetings to ensure party business continued uninterrupted, helping to sustain momentum for Democratic victories. His efforts extended beyond Alabama, organizing buses to Georgia to support Senator Raphael Warnock’s election and re-election campaigns.

Josh has also been a trusted advisor and strategist for key campaigns, including Neil Rafferty’s re-election to Alabama House District 54 and Travis Hendrix’s election to Alabama House District 55. Through his consulting company, he has provided over $100,000 in free campaign services, ensuring Democratic candidates across Alabama have access to the tools they need to succeed.

A passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Josh serves as President of Central Alabama Pride, Alabama’s largest and oldest Pride organization. He has expanded the organization’s reach and impact, organizing inclusive events that celebrate diversity and foster unity.

An accomplished author, Josh’s book, Finding My Rainbow: A Journey of Courage, Acceptance, and Pride, reflects his personal journey as a queer advocate in Alabama and serves as an inspiration for others. His leadership has been recognized nationally, including being named an Obama Foundation USA Leader.

Josh holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Miles College and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. With a focus on creating inclusive policies, advancing civil rights, and empowering communities, Josh Coleman continues to be a transformative force in Alabama politics and beyond.
